Anuradhapura, a sacred city founded around a cutting from the Buddha’s fig tree, the "tree of enlightenment," was brought to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century B.C. by Sanghamitta, the founder of the Buddhist nuns' order. Once a flourishing political and religious capital of Ceylon for over 1,300 years, Anuradhapura was abandoned following an invasion in 993. After being concealed in dense jungle for centuries, this magnificent site, filled with ancient palaces, monasteries, and monuments, is now open to visitors once again.
